Stephens House and Gardens Free


The small collection of exhibits housed in the conservatory of Stephens House include examples of the development of writing equipment over the ages, the activities of Dr. Henry Stephens the inventor of the blue black ink, and his son Henry Charles Stephens (Inky) who purchased Avenue House in 1874 and who lived there until his death in 1918.

The gardens are open to the public (seasonal opening) and include a scuplture of Goon star Spike Milligan. Tours of the house and garden can be booked.

Opening Times

The Stephens Collection. Is now closed for conservation and maintenance prior to being rehoused in the new Visitor Centre in Spring 2017.

Gardens open all year round during daylight hours

House viewing by arrangement only. Monday - Friday 09:00 - 17:00
