Crane Park Island

Just outside Twickenham, along the River Crane, you'll find a Grade II listed Shot Tower – reportedly used for lead manufacture years ago (although some think it was actually a mill), the tower is now a visitor centre and the only entrance to Crane Park Island.

The area was once the grounds for the Hounslow Gunpowder Works, as well as several other mills dating back centuries. You can even find some remnants of old foundations among the bushes if you search closely enough. The area started out as a large pond, but was drained to create the park you can see now. Full of reedbeds and ponds, this river island houses fish, small mammals and a rich birdlife ready to discover. The London Wildlife Trust is still exploring the history of the area, with plenty of fascinating stories to uncover. Open to the public at all times, pull on your wellies and go exploring.
